•• Study: Less TV Doesn’t Boost Exercise for Kids
Turning off the television doesn’t mean that children are more inclined to be physically active. A 2007 study, conducted by medical researchers in Massachusetts and published in the journal Pediatrics, was aimed at examining the associations between television viewing and physical activity in adolescence. The four-year study of more than 10,000 U.S. children found no relationship between TV watching and leisure-time exercise.
This is useful information as parents are becoming more aware of the serious health crisis facing overweight American youth. It is not enough just to turn off the TV or limit other sedentary activity with the assumption that exercise will prevail. Planning for (and following through with) regular physical activity like family bike riding, walking, or hiking is an important component of a healthy lifestyle, for everyone.

•• Mark your calendar, JUNE 8, 2007... Bring your kids, and join your neighbors and meet Dr. Rees' family for a “Active Family Neighborhood” hike through Wompatuck State Park.
This low-key event is completely free, and meant to stimulate both your heart and your sense of community. We invite ANYONE interested in getting outside and stretching your legs after a long week to join us for a 2-mile loop through beautiful Wompatuck State Park.
Plan to meet in front of the visitor center building at the main entrance parking lots at 6:00 PM. The trails are more-or-less flatish and more-or-less paved so that families with younger children can bring strollers ("joggers" are preferable for the off road sections). See MAP.
Don't forget to bring your water bottles and mosquito repellant... and come out to have some healthy fun with us! Please RSVP, just so that we can get an idea on how many people to expect. Thanks. See you there! Please contact the office for more information or with questions. 781-741-5300
